On the Cordel
Information A gentle walk that is never far away from the village of Almoharín and yet passes through lovely, quiet countryside. Part of the walk, from GPS2 to GPS4, is 3km long and on the old Mérida to Trujillo Cordel. Cordels were used for moving sheep in the time of the trashumancia. This track is, by law, 30m. wide which makes it a wonderful place in the Spring for lush vegetation and flowers. Iberian hares are often spotted and there are birds, of course. The walk is not suitable for hot days of fierce sun as there is little shade but can be enjoyed the rest of the year. Do not walk with dogs as one part of the walk is on a public right-of-way (between GPS4 and GPS5) and there may be cows grazing but there are never dangerous bulls. Start: Almoharín swimming pool by the EX206 (ample parking) Finish: As above Time: allow 4 hours to enjoy the flowers and views properly Distance: 11.50 kilometres Elevation: lowest 280m, highest 365m Difficulty: low for regular walkers Route: circular — map by Google Walk extension (dark green line on map): 13.50km in total Directions 1. N39 10' 31.55" W06 03' 05.48" Start at the Almoharín swimming pool just to the side of the EX206 Cáceres to Mijadas road and walk straight ahead on the lane, passing a low ford. Pass olive and fig fincas. Do not take the first turning left, that is the return. Keep ahead, pass another ford and at a big Y-junction with a white house on the right, keep right. Do not take any tiny turning right or left but keep on the lane. At a house on the right, 'La Redonda', keep left. Pass 'Finca La Cañamera' on the left. At a crossroad keep ahead. The lane now becomes a footpath and can be a bit boggy in places in wet weather. 2. N39 10' 59.24" W06 04' 37.20" Arrive at the Cordel and a T-junction. Turn left. Walk on the Cordel until the Almoharín to Arroyomolinos road is reached. 3. N39 10' 11.28" W06 05' 15.06" Cross with care and continue on the Cordel. The verges here are especially beautiful during March to May with a profusion of flowering bushes. Cattle graze in the pastures on either side of the Cordel. Arrive at a gate-free, cattlegrid on the left. 4. N39 09' 42.95" W06 05' 37.59" Cross the cattlegrid to walk along the well-defined track with retama bushes dotted on either side — which smell wonderful on warm Summer nights. An old well-made stone wall appears on the left and beyond it is a charca; a manmade lake. This is a spot for bird activity at certain times of the day. Come to a natural left bend in the track. 5. N39 09' 11.87" W06 05' 26.15" There is a small river that runs on the right and a copse of shady trees. Continue on the track which is straight ahead. Ignore any small junctions on the right. Arrive at a Y-junction. 6. N39 10' 00.03" W06 03' 35.69" For the shorter walk, turn left and walk to reach the Almoharín to Arroyomolinos road. Cross with care and walk, facing on-coming traffic, for 350m. 7. N39 10' 11.43" W06 03' 13.10" Do not turn left too soon. There is a small lane on the left by some gateposts but do not take this turn. Walk on to take the next left to walk down a straight track. 8. N39 10' 21.98" W06 03' 18.28" At the T-junction, turn right to reach the swimming pool. For the extension: at the Y-junction GPS6 turn right and walk along a well-made lane. Follow the natural bend right, then left, in the lane. A small river appears on the left, dry in the Summer but very pretty after the rains. Arrive at an old Roman bridge, modified in Medieval times. It is named El Coto. 7a. N39 09' 46.09" W06 03' 00.35" Cross the bridge and take the left fork to walk straight ahead and come to a ford. Cross over and reach the EX206. 8a. N39 10' 25.44" W06 03' 48.44" Cross with care. Walk straight ahead. The co-operativa is on your right. Do not turn right or left nor go straight ahead but follow the main road around to the right and then, passing Calle Salvador on the left, continue up the small hill to arrive at the square and the church. The bar, La Fuente, in the square will be happy to serve you refreshments. 9a N39 10' 35.67" W06 02' 39.06" With the bar on your left, go left at the fountain, pass the LiberBank, also left, and take the next left into Calle Zurbarán. Walk all the way down this road, keeping straight to reach the EX206. Cross with care and arrive back at the swimming pool. Photos: February and May |
