The Sierra de Gredos is the highest mountain range in Extremadura. Although the sierra extends into neighbouring provinces, Extremadura has the south-facing mountains and this makes walking enjoyable nearly all year round. The very highest routes are best walked in Summer when the risks of fog and snow are eliminated. The lower slopes of the mountains can be walked throughout Spring and Autumn. The Winter is also a nice time to walk the valleys but check the weather forecast for bad conditions before setting out. The valleys are dotted with friendly villages and there are many footpaths going along rivers and into extensive woodlands. The Ambroz and the Jerte valleys, with their deciduous forests, are spectacular in the Autumn. The Jerte is also known for cherry blossoms in Spring and fruit in early Summer. It's a wonderful walking area — but take the usual precautions if doing the higher walks.
